Function of LED Lighting

According to the U.S. Department of energy LED’s differ from traditional light sources in the way they produce light. In an incandescent lamp, a tungsten filament is heated by electric current until it glows or emits light. In a fluorescent lamp, an electric arc excites mercury atoms, which emit ultraviolet (UV) radiation. After striking the phosphor coating on the inside of glass tubes, the UV radiation is converted and emitted as visible light.

An LED, in contrast, is a semiconductor diode. It consists of a chip of semi-conducting material treated to create a structure called a p-n (positive-negative) junction. When connected to a power source, current flows from the p-side or anode to the n-side, or cathode, but not in the reverse direction. Charge-carriers (electrons and electron holes) flow into the junction from electrodes. When an electron meets a hole, it falls into a lower energy level, and releases energy in the form of a photon (light).

The specific wavelength or color emitted by the LED depends on the materials used to make the diode. "White" light is created by combining the light from red, green, and blue (RGB) LED's or by coating a blue LED with yellow phosphor.

Function of Batteries

NiMH

NiMH (Nickel Metal-Hydride) batteries are typically more cost effective than others. They can recharge for months or years and are a wise choice for thrifty spenders. As the charging voltage is basically constant when the battery is charging from an empty level, most of this power will be converted to chemical energy. However, when the battery is fully charged, most of the charging power will then be converted to heat

Li-ion

Li-ion batteries are lighter than equivalent NiMH batteries and many times much lighter. They also have a much higher energy density than similarly sized NiMH cells. However, Li-ion batteries are more expensive due to the Lithium compounds that are used in their construction and they must be designed with an electronic circuit to carefully monitor charging. The service life of a Li-ion cell is shorter than that of NiMH, and will provide approximately half the number of charge cycles as a NiMH battery (typically 500 charge cycles for Li-ion vs. 1000 for NiMH)
